I will never forget the years that I began to study Dr. MacArthur’s Dispensationalism. He seems to want to distance himself from Chafer and Scofield and others who were in the origins of Dispensationalism. But one day I was sitting with Dr. Robert Thomas (whose commentary on Revelation is the basis of Dr. MacArthur’s commentary on Revelation) and I asked Dr. Thomas point blank what “version” of Dispy do he and Dr. MacArthur affirm and he said it is basically Historical Dispensationalism in the strand of Scofield.
I learned that day that all Dispensationalism is at its core the same hermeneutical error that was devised by John Nelson Darby, Samuel Tregelles, and Charles Henry Mackintosh and was made popular by Chafer, Moody, and Scofield. You can try to make changes to the system any way you like but the real problem is that it is a faulty hermeneutic at it’s core. It simply rejects the teachings of Jesus, Peter and Paul concerning the New Covenant Church being the continuation of the true Israel of God.

Interestingly the tension between MacArthur’s presentation of “Lordship” and Chafer’s “He that is Spiritual” or Ryrie/Hodge was a helpful means providentially used of God to bring me out of dispensationalism altogether.
