**UPDATE** Because Tiger sank that incredible twelve footer, tickets went on sale for the Monday 18-hole playoff. Yep… I grabbed three and will take my boys! What a Father’s Day gift from Tiger!! Watch for me on TV. I will be the guy wearing a yellow LSU ball cap.
**UPDATE #2** Tiger WINS! Jake, Collin and I watched him practice, play the first six holes and got front row seats on the 18th. People inquired about my LSU cap and I told them, “Tigers are National Champions!” And Tiger Woods beat Rocco after 19 exciting holes. Afterwards, Tiger revealed that he had a torn ACL in his left knee and would need another surgery and not be able to play until 2009.
Are you guys watching the US Open?!
Tiger has proven his case again for being the best athlete in the world… this time showing that golfers have to play through pain as well. The guy is simply incredible.
Torry Pines Golf Course holds a special place in my heart. Several years ago I was moving into a home we had bought in Murrieta, CA. In the process, someone broke into our U-Haul truck and stole it… along with everything we owned. It’s a long story that I may share one day on Fide-O, but it is sufficient to say that it was devastating to us. My wife lost everything she had saved from her childhood, marriage, the birth of her children, etc. I lost all of my library, all of my doctoral thesis that I was working on (and never completed due to the robbery), and all of my belongings. We had moved 2000 miles from home to plant a church and arrived on the mission field (which is what we call California) with nothing but a promise from God that His grace will be sufficient.
But concerning Torry Pines, I had already booked a round of golf at Torrey Pines for that week so I went with Scott and some other friends. I was in the depths of shock and dismay from the robbery, but my friends said there was no reason to skip the golf game. I actually rode to Torrey Pines without a shirt and had to buy one in the golf shop.
As I stood on that beautiful course and stared across the vast Pacific Ocean, the Spirit of God calmed my heart and renewed my confidence in God’s sovereignty. Our “stuff” was never recovered, but my spiritual resolve was increased. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
By the way, here is an article about a young man named Rick Fowler from our town who made the cut this year at The US Open. I practice at the same place he does (Murrieta Golf Range) but I don’t think it is helping me as much.

I don’t know about golf being a sport, or golfers athletes…have you seen some of those guys??? I’m glad that they have to wear shirts on the course! 2 guys in a burning airplane with 1 parachute…now THAT’S a sport!
Jason,
My wife and I were getting ready to go to bed on Saturday night and we watched Tiger sink that incredible putt on 18. Neither of us are golf nuts, but we both sat there with our mouths wide open saying NOTHING!
Tiger is an amazing golfer, I pray that the Lord would get a hold of his heart one day.
Phira, if I played golf like you I would claim it as a sport either.
Tiger is an athlete, yes. Golf is not a sport, it’s a game. Tiger is an athlete playing a very lucrative, skill-demanding, game.
I’ll bet it was fun to go! Hope you had a good time.
The playoff was great. We got up close for many of the holes and got a front row seat at the 18th. When we came home my two boys stood around the TV where my wife had recorded the game, and watched until they saw themselves on ESPN — COOOOL!
(We are clearly seen at the front edge of the first tee box.)
SAN DIEGO—A man who used several different bent sticks to hit a ball to an area comprised of very short grass surrounding a hole in the ground was praised for his courage Monday after he used a somewhat smaller stick to gently roll the ball into the aforementioned hole in fewer attempts than his competitors. “What guts, what confidence,” ESPN commentator Scott Van Pelt said of the man, who was evidently unable to carry his sticks himself, employing someone else to hold the sticks and manipulate the flag sticking out of the hole in the ground while he rolled the ball into it. “You have to be so brave, so self-assured, so strong mentally to [roll a ball into a hole in the ground]. Amazing.” The man in question apparently hurt his knee during this activity.
