I heard about an ol’ Cajun who had a fish tank in his restaurant that served catfish and seafood. He put catfish in the tank to swim around and entertain the customers. But to his dismay the catfish floated on bottom like they weren’t even alive . . . they didn’t move. So the Cajun went out and bought a fresh water barracuda. He put it in the tank those catfish came alive!
Sometimes, friends, God will put a barracuda in your tank.
There is nothing you can do about it. You do not govern your circumstances, but only how you are going to act in them.
Job said in Job 14:18-22 – “But the mountain falls and crumbles away, and the rock is removed from its place; 19 the waters wear away the stones; the torrents wash away the soil of the earth; so you destroy the hope of man.” (Emphasis mine)
Job discovered who his biggest problem was… God. God is relentlessly antagonistic against our carnal hopes and dreams. He never leaves us alone.
In fact a Christian is a person who has double suffering:
- The suffering that comes to all generally (Job 5:7).
- The suffering that comes to the Christian particularly (1 Peter 3:17; 1 Peter 4:16; 2 Tim 3:12; Phil 1:29), including God’s chastening (Heb 12:6).
God never leaves us alone. But is that really a bad thing?? No. Why? Because God is constantly reminding us that we cannot get comfortable with this cursed world.
