Not So Perfect Season

All this talk about a perfect season. Jarvis Green chuckles mirthlessly. Then his eyes turn red and swollen. The win-loss record may be unblemished, but the season? Perfect? Not from where he’s standing.

The Patriots’ backup defensive end recognizes more than most that even though the team is 18-0 and favored to win the Super Bowl for the fourth time in seven years, there’s something bigger that is missing. Someone who is missing. And not only from his own life.

Last Memorial Day weekend, Patriots defensive end Marquise Hill died in a jet-skiing accident in Louisiana. He was 24. Green and Hill had known each other since Hill was in the 10th grade. They played for LSU together, played for the Patriots together and won a Super Bowl together three years ago.
