I was thinking about Woody Hayes, Bobby Knight, and Mike Tyson today, men who personified the idea of unsportsmanship. There is something about competition that can eventually make men do things that should never be done — and then causes them to try shamelessly to justify it.
All to often I have seen such tempers flare among men when discussing theology. And just like in sports, it is usually only one hot-head but everybody ends up looking foolish. The difference between sports and church though is that we all have seen the batters charging the pitcher’s mound, but we still love watching the World Series. Yet one silly theological argument can turn off many people from theology for years.
Just something to think about. May we students of the Word continue to debate and discuss, but may we never get “flagged” for un-Christianlike behavior. sports athletics attitude
