This week Mark Altrogge is doing the announcements. His theme for the week is why guitarist are better than pianist. Roger, Tony and I have submitted our reasons (even though I play both) and Mark used two of them tonight. Here is our list.

7. Because a guitar player can play a triad with two fingers
6. Because Fender is easier to spell than Bosendorfer
5. Because guitar players shread and piano players tickle the ivories
4. Because no one ever died from a guitar falling on their head
3. Because a piano has three pedals and not one of them “Wah”
2. Because the most memorable part of the song “Piano Man” is the harmonica

Good stuff. My father called his Martin his “Street piano”.
Because we can shift a song up a semitone without needing Advil.

Finally! A post that makes some kind of sense!
At least with pianists, you don’t have to painfully listen to “Stairway to Heaven” or some other standards for guitarists that get pulled up out of some dark chasm of guitar memory.
Easier to replace.
Pianists don’t have to tune as much.
Like I said over at Challies:
Pianists are less likely to have mullets.
She’s right, far greater levels of Mulletude coming out of the guitar playing communitiy. In fact even those who play the air guitar are more likely to display the Mullet.
Few things are worse than the “Church Worship Team Mullet”.
If the great guitarists of the 60s and 70s didn’t convince you guitar is better, there’s no hope for you. Reprobate, all of you.
Though I’d have to admit that Paul McCartney would have to be the exception. He plays both with mastery.

Now, THERE’S a battle to decide whether guitar or piano is better. All the other suggestions are WAY too subjective. As far as longevity, impact on their field and lasting significance go, these two are massive in their influence.
Guitar is still better, though.

Pachabel Canon in D on electric guitar takes the cake. Piano… not so impressive.
