Ha ha ah. It’s funny and yet so very sad. What got me was “use images of christ enclosed to spark discussion”. **Iconoclast covering eyes**
I followed the oldbill link, who wrote the communion poem. Just reading his links like leavingfundamentalism.org is very telling as to why these guys are so confused. For example, these guys went from following Benny Hinn to following Tony Campolo. It is typical of so many emergents (and the “grace fellowship” from this link is an emergent group) to just be absolutely confused, worldly, humanistic, and impiously irreverent.
In fact, did anyone notice the fellowship’s slogan — “unprotected worship”. It is an obvious use of phrase attached to condoms and sex.
It is disgustingly unbiblical and strikingly unchristian.
Sorry, while I am unsurprised at this (I was around during the Jesus people days when they used a “Big Mac” for the bread and a “Coke” for the wine) this doesn’t make me long for “rapture” my hope is still fixed on His glorious appearing.”
What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us.
(Ecc 1:9-10 ESV)
One of the things I’m moved to do when I read about something like that is to examine my own communion practice. What of quarter-inch square crackers and a thimble of grape juice is patterned after biblical communion and what of it is patterned after the reductionistic tendencies of modern-day Baptists? Is communion meant to be more participatory than just sitting in my seat and receiving the cracker and juice from a passing plate?
I probably wouldn’t be led to text message confessions over my cell phone, but is there something in between that moves the traditional Baptist spectator-oriented observance toward something more participatory without becoming irreverent?
And I’ll have to save the “rapture” longings for others.
This is the sad but expected outcome of McLaren’s and Campolo’s misguided methodology and heretical theology.
What’s next? Inviting someone to impersonate Jesus while everyone rotates to His table? I wonder if they would have a problem finding someone to play the part of Judas? Interesting thought…
“Even so, come Lord Jesus.”
Why is it that people are so scared of looking at the way we ‘do’ church differently? What are you frightened of? Is there only one way to go to heaven? And that way is the ‘Baptist’ way? I thought that this thought pattern was left behind in the 60′s – obviously not.
For me – it is sadder to hear you react so negitively than to actually look at this emergent/alternative movement and go why is this of interest to people? Why aren’t they wanting to come to our ‘church’?
Church is a group of people sharing themselves not the way we show God reverance.
May God grant you understanding and tolerance.
themerryrose, the answer to your question is yes. There is only one way to go to heaven. It is not the Baptist way. May God not grant me tolerance.
I like the phrase you used Scott.
Nut job.
I’ve got an idea…let’s all show our irreverence to God and His divine commands by focusing our worship upon us.
The above post was removed by the administrator for shameless plug of really bad theology.
“And they casually devoted themselves to their own inventions, to candle lighting, and to the walking through labyrinths. And added to their number daily were those being led astray.”
Why is merryrose so afraid of the biblical way? Why is merryrose afraid of God’s church as described in the Bible? Merry says, “Church is a group of people sharing themselves…” REALLY? So that is what it is? I wonder why my Bible doesn’t agree with that? Merry we thank you for commenting but really, when you speak of “understanding” and “tolerance” you should first consider your understanding and acceptance of God’s revelation in Scripture. Doing church “different” from the Biblical revelation is not “tolerated” by God. What part of that don’t you understand?
I’m speechless…
I pastor a church where the Lord’s Table consists of a 1/4″ square cracker and grape juice (with apologies to Mr. Turk – PHEH! Baptists!). I’ve been kicking around actually baking unleavened bread for the service but that’s a debate for another day.
The one thing that is consistant in our celebrating the Lord’s Table is the reminder to myself and the church that it is only by the broken body and shed blood of the Savior that any of us have any hope.
How does burning a litmus paper in a candle remind me of the sacrifice that was made for me? How does texting “I confess…” remind me of the sacrifice that was made for me?
Much more could be said but I’ll stop… I really am at a loss
Yours in Christ
Amazing how God’s people expressing themselves differently are abused because of that – I am yet to see that emergent/alternative worship actually be heretical in what they say. This is about how they engage and share their faith within a community of believers.
May God grant you peace, tolerance and love for all peoples.
Sorry – wasn’t trying to post anonymously – logged in on the wrong account the first time
I went back and re-read the post. I went back and re-read the end of 1 Corinthians 11.
I can’t in all honesty resolve the two. Some of the things described in the original post MAY (heavy emphasis there) be suitable for an icebreaker or something informal but not for communion… Help me to understand how the service described is the Lord’s Table in light of 1 Cor 11:17-22
I may be looking to get flamed here for lifting scripture but I really do want to understand where this comes from…
Yours in Christ
Communion, and Christianity as a whole, is not about you, or about me.
It is about God, and His glory and worshipping Him the way HE demands, not how we like.
Ask Uzzah, or Nadab and Abihu about how tolerant God is about casual worship.
His Son took upon Himself all of Gods Wrath against sin, died, and rose again for us, and for His glory. And we want to turn worship, and communion with Him into a coffee house or a car rally?

the text confession thing is utterly ridiculous! The whole thing is, but the text message thing takes the cake.
I wonder if they served cake?
Maybe they should consider that for next time.
