This Sunday evening Murrieta Valley Church will be hosting David Clotfelter who recently wrote Sinners in the Hands of a Good God. In chapter 3, Dr. Clotfelter explains that for many
people, the idea that God is absent from hell serves both to highlight the misery of the lost and to safeguard the character of God from the charge that He takes delight in human torment. But he rightly notes, “…the vast number of texts that speak of God as directly involved in punishing the wicked require us to think of Him as very much present in hell. God does not merely send fire upon the lost; He Himself is the consuming fire with which they must dwell eternally (Heb. 12:29; Isa. 33:14). He does not merely consign them to punishment; He punishes them.” God is the eternal, implacable enemy of the lost. They will be forever “banished” from His blessings (2 Thess. 1:9) and suffer His unrelenting wrath and fury.
BTW, the punishment of the wicked will not be carried out by demons. In fact, the demons will be in torment, too (Matt. 8:29; Luke 8:31), and will not play a role in punishing the lost. The tormentor is GOD Himself . . . for it is His justice upon the damned. As Clotfelter says, in Hell the “Light of Israel” becomes a consuming flame (Isa. 10:17) to destroy all who have opposed Him.

Wow! I wish I could be there guys. This was the “book of the month” for our church down here in Beaumont (www.rpcbmt.org) a few months ago. It is one of may all time favorites. Clotfelter does a masterful job of dealing with a very difficulty and unpopular subject in this day and age. My hat is off to him and I wish I could be there with you guys! May the Lord greatly bless him and y’all!

Mark, thanks for the comments. I think that this book is one of the best I have read in a few years. Keep us in your prayers for this Sunday — we have invited some other churches. BTW, I am not sure why 3 identical comments were posted for you. Let me know if our site has caused for you any tech problems.
Jason,
As we say in Texas: You betcha buddy! I will be praying for y’all. The message of this book needs to be spread far and wide, believed and lived in light of, IMO. Sorry about the three identical posts. I was having some “technical” difficulties and when they were resolved (so I thought) I only saw one of my comments posted. I will try to be more careful in the future…Thanks for keeping such a great blog going. I really like what you guys have to say and am encouraged by it. May the Sovereign and Gracious LORD bless your ministries for His own glory!
grace and peace,
